Specialized Knowledge, Specialized Expertise
As part of the next chapter in my life, I have elected to manage, lead and actively participate in a consultancy based on my education, experience and expertise. I have been fortunate to have met and worked with extraordinary, highly qualified individuals who served within the same healthcare niche that became the focal point of my career. I will strive to utilize the specialized knowledge that came from that experince for projects that match my skills, and draw others into collaboration those who can best address challenges outside my core knowledge, and, working together, solve challenges brought to my (our) attention.

About Rural Emergency Hospital Consultants:
I am well aware that Rural Emergency Hospital (REH) designation exists, and decided that the phrase also fits the mission laid out above. While I have kept abreast of the developments since the designation's inception (and advocated on the national level for years for something similar), my personal experience at this point only includes one REH conversion. While, our organization was involved in discussions and evaluations by several other Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs), they elected to stay with their current status. We collaborated with two hospitals that contemplated a change from Prospective Payment to CAH, a prospect that opened up with the introduction of the REH designation, and one is in the process of making that transition.
So... I don't intend to specialize in consulting about REH's. I do know of organizations that have accomplished this transition and the highly qualified teams that have supported that change and can be of assistance in identifying and utilizing those resources. I do intend to specialize in emergency care delivered in rural hospitals, and that is why I chose the name for this group.
About Me:
I retired after 22 years as Chief Operating Officer of a physician staffing company that served over forty hospitals, primarily in the midwest - a vast majority of which were Critical Access Hospitals. I collaborated with our partners in creating and sustaining Emergency Medicine staffing strategies, and worked with key leaders on site, hundreds of times, to optimzie these strategies. While most of the providers associated with our group were physicians working in the Emergency Department (ED), we also originated and deployed hybrid ED / hospitalist programs, integrated Advanced Practice Clinicians into the staffing mix, staffed both dedicated hospitalist programs and dual ED/hospitalist programs, collaborated on telehealth integration, consultation and APC supervision, and designed and implemented a radio frequency identification RFID) hardware / software product that facilitates tracking provider availability (aka standby) time for Medicare Cost Reports.
I have a Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA) and one in Healthcare Administration (MHA). I trained and worked as a paramedic for ground and rotor wing (helicopter) services, and as an educator, with an emphasis on resucitation science, pediatrics, and medical-legal matters, and have presented in various forums over a hundred times. I am an author of a chapter in a Critical Care Paramedic textbook. I served as National Faculty for the American Heart Association's Pediatric Advanced Lifes Support (PALS) program.
I serve on the Emergency Department Practice Management (EDPMA) Board of Directors and as that organization's Co-Chair for its Education Committee. I served as a National Examiner for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award for three years.
I'm an avid traveler, and have visited 47 countries (the profile picture was taken in Marrakesh) and all seven continents. I've been married for 38 years and am the proud father of two grown children.
